TrackTown Summer Series Draft

The five-round draft began promptly at 4 p.m. (Pacific) on May 19 and took place at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OR.

The newly hired General Managers for the four teams were on hand to announce their selections – Bernard Lagat (Portland), Sanya Richards-Ross (Philadelphia) and Nick Symmonds (San Francisco) were physically present at the draft. Allyson Felix (New York) was patched in remotely from Jamaica, where she was set to compete on May 20. Jordan Kent and Sasha Spencer Atwood served as the draft moderators.

The 2017 draft order was based on the final team standings from last summer’s inaugural TrackTown Summer Series meet at Hayward Field.

Thus, Philadelphia, the fourth-place team in 2016, had the first pick, which includes one male and one female athlete. Portland (3rd in 2016) picked second, followed by New York (2nd in 2016) and San Francisco (2016 team champions). At the conclusion of the first round, the order was reversed, so San Francisco made the first selection of the second round.

Round 1: Team A, Team B, Team C, Team D
Round 2: Team D, Team C, Team B, Team A
… and so on through five rounds.

Only athletes who did not compete in the 2016 Summer Series were eligible to be selected in the 2017 draft. Athletes with college eligibility remaining were not permitted to enter the draft and will not be able to compete in the Summer Series until they have exhausted their college eligibility.

Athletes who were not selected in the draft on May 19 or are not offered a contract extension are still eligible to be signed to one of the four teams as a free agent. Those free agent selections will begin to take place after May 19. Athletes who competed in last year’s Summer Series are eligible to be signed to a contract extension or a free agent contract.

Contract extensions are being offered to select returning athletes prior to the draft. We will announce those contract extensions when they have been completed. Click the button below to see the list of athletes currently eligible for a contract extension. This list will be updated periodically prior to the draft as we continue to receive interest from returning athletes.
