TrackTown USA Earns 2025 Oregon Consular Corps “Ambassador Award”

On May 15, TrackTown USA and Hayward Field at the University of Oregon will be honored by the Oregon Consular Corps (OCC) with the reception of the OCC’s 2025 “Ambassador Award,” given annually to an Oregon-based organization for outstanding work in contributing to the region’s economic vitality and quality of life. The OCC is an organization of career and honorary consular officials who serve, or have served, as representatives of foreign nations and jurisdictions in Oregon and in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon Consular Corps promotes activities that support international trade, business, exchange, and education.

TrackTown USA was selected as a co-recipient of this award due to the organization’s work in upholding the history and tradition of Hayward Field through hosting premier track & field meets, which attract fans and athletes throughout the world. TrackTown USA organized the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF, now World Athletics) World Junior Championships; the 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2025 USA Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships; the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland; and the 2016, 2020, and 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track & Field. In partnership with USATF, the organization brought the 2022 World Athletics Championships to the United States for the first time. TrackTown USA also delivers the Wanda Diamond League’s recurring Prefontaine Classic, recognized as one of the world’s best track and field meets and the only Wanda Diamond League meeting held in the United States.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Oregon Consular Corps for our work alongside the University of Oregon in the sport of track & field,” says TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly. “Our mission has, is, and will continue to be hosting premier events and providing exceptional service to thousands of athletes and fans who visit Hayward Field from every corner of the world.”

TrackTown USA and the University of Oregon will receive the award at the Oregon Consular Corps’ annual Celebrate Trade event, a gala held in cooperation with its sister organization the Oregon Consular Corps Scholarship Fund that helps fundraise for the OCC’s Scholarship Fund as well as honors organizations and individuals. This year’s keynote speaker at the event is none other than University of Oregon track & field alumnus and former decathlon world record-holder Ashton Eaton.

TrackTown USA will continue to uphold the organization and Hayward Field’s status as an international beacon of track & field excellence with next year’s hosting of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, once again bringing the best in the world to the state of Oregon.

Chasing Gold at Hayward: The UO’s Olympic Trials Legacy

The U.S., State of Oregon, University of Oregon, and U.S. Olympic flags flew high over the team trials for track and field in 1972.

Once again Hayward Field will host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track & Field this summer. To mark the 100th year since the first occasion, the UO Libraries is hosting an exhibit titled “Chasing Gold at Hayward: The UO’s Olympic Trials Legacy,” which details the significant connection between the University of Oregon and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field.

So, slip on your favorite kicks (no spikes, please) and head to Knight Library to take a captivating journey through archival materials from the UO Libraries Special Collections and University Archives that illustrate the evolution of Hayward Field from its modest origins to a world-class facility. Carefully curated by newly named Athletics Archivist, Lauren Goss, the exhibit includes a wide variety of artifacts including:

  • Programs from 1956, 1968, and 1972

  • Letters to/from Bill Bowerman, W.L. “Bill” Hayward, and other track and field luminaries

  • Webfoot Runners workout sheets for athletes Roscoe Divine and Dave Wilborn from 1968

  • Photos showing the evolution of Hayward Field

  • Video clips from Olympic Track and Field trials and other competitions

  • The book Hayward Field: Legends and Legacy includes UO athlete-alumni English Gardner and Devon Allen among others

Not only are the artifacts interesting, but they are artfully arranged in the UO Libraries’ brand new glass display cases. Better lighting and more shelf space allow Mandi Garcia, library exhibits coordinator, to show off each artifact to its best advantage.

Celebrating 100 Years of Track and Field Trials

Positioned at the heart of a bustling university campus, the iconic Hayward Field—the site of victories, heartaches, and record-breaking moments—stands as a testament to the fervent local athletic community and their enduring passion for track and field.

Since 1924, the UO has hosted Olympic tryouts, exhibition meets, and team trials many times! The events have taken (or are taking) place on the UO campus in the following years:

  • 1924—Olympic Tryouts

  • 1956—U.S. Olympic Track Team Exhibition Meet

  • 1960—U.S. Olympic Men’s Track & Field Exhibition Meet

  • 1968—U.S. Pre-Olympic Men’s Track and Field Exhibition Meet

  • 1972—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 1976—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (the first trials to feature combined competition for men and women)

  • 1980—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (though the trials were awarded to Eugene for the third time in a row, President Jimmy Carter and the US Olympic Committee boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow in protest of the Soviet-Afghan War. Members of the U.S. Olympic Team were awarded Congressional Gold Medals in recognition of not being able to compete.)

  • 2008—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 2012—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 2016—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (TrackTown USA, Inc., a local non-profit organization, begin organizing trials at Hayward Field)

  • 2020—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (hosted in 2021 due to COVID-19)

  • 2022—hosted the World Athletics Championships

  • 2024—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (June 21–30)

New Archivist Position to Anchor Athletics Collections

This exhibit also serves as the starting line for a new athletics archival program. Earlier this year, UO Libraries received close to $1 million from a generous lead donor to support expansion of our athletics archives, headed by Reference Services Coordinator and Assistant University Archivist for Athletics Lauren Goss.

The new funding will enable Goss to more proactively curate records in this area and engage in additional academic and public outreach, building on the UO’s strong athletics brand and legacy. Goss is now just one of fewer than ten archivists in the United States with this role. Her research interests and expertise in Title IX and UO athletes position her well to expand collections, support researchers, and further educate our community about the UO Libraries' rich resources. Learn more about her research in her thesis.

“The history of UO athletics is intertwined with the history of the university. I am honored by this generous funding to create this new program. I look forward to working with campus partners and community organizations on innovative projects,” Goss said.

Vice Provost and University Librarian Alicia Salaz echoed Goss’s excitement about the new program, sharing: “The athletics archival program is closely aligned with both University Archives’ mission to preserve and tell the story of the University’s history and impact and the UO Libraries’ strategies of enhancing community and civic engagement and contributing to undergraduate research and instructional opportunities with the use of primary sources.”

TrackTown USA Continues Work With Black Women Photographers For 2024 Events Season

EUGENE, Ore. – TrackTown USA will continue its work with Black Women Photographers for the third consecutive year to provide paid opportunities for photographers and videographers to cover select events this summer. This will be the first year that will include videographers in addition to photographers.

“TrackTown USA is proud to support the mission of Black Women Photographers,” said TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly. “What Black Women Photographers founder Polly Irungu has built is beyond incredible. We are proud to call her an alumna of our organization, and we agree that prioritizing the content itself and diversifying those creating that content are necessary for the advancement of our sport and events.”

The previous two years of the partnership resulted in contracting nearly one dozen talented Black Women Photographers who produced hundreds of images published by TrackTown USA, The Prefontaine Classic, and competing athletes.

“One of Polly’s first internships during her undergrad was working in the digital department at TrackTown USA. Now, collaborating with TrackTown USA to open the doors for talented creatives just like how TrackTown USA opened the door for our founder Polly is an honor and a full circle moment,” said Black Women Photographers Executive Director Beth Irungu. “We’re grateful for their support in our mission.”

Applications are being accepted now through Friday, March 8 at BlackWomenPhotographers.com/TrackTown-USA. Applicants are also encouraged to showcase their submitted work via Instagram by posting with the hashtag #BWPxTrackTown.

Together, the TrackTown USA and Black Women Photographers teams will review the submitted applications to make the selection of creatives hired to cover this summer’s events. Content created by the hired photographers and videographers will be utilized on the TrackTown USA and Pre Classic platforms for coverage of the events.
