Chasing Gold at Hayward: The UO’s Olympic Trials Legacy

The U.S., State of Oregon, University of Oregon, and U.S. Olympic flags flew high over the team trials for track and field in 1972.

Once again Hayward Field will host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track & Field this summer. To mark the 100th year since the first occasion, the UO Libraries is hosting an exhibit titled “Chasing Gold at Hayward: The UO’s Olympic Trials Legacy,” which details the significant connection between the University of Oregon and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field.

So, slip on your favorite kicks (no spikes, please) and head to Knight Library to take a captivating journey through archival materials from the UO Libraries Special Collections and University Archives that illustrate the evolution of Hayward Field from its modest origins to a world-class facility. Carefully curated by newly named Athletics Archivist, Lauren Goss, the exhibit includes a wide variety of artifacts including:

  • Programs from 1956, 1968, and 1972

  • Letters to/from Bill Bowerman, W.L. “Bill” Hayward, and other track and field luminaries

  • Webfoot Runners workout sheets for athletes Roscoe Divine and Dave Wilborn from 1968

  • Photos showing the evolution of Hayward Field

  • Video clips from Olympic Track and Field trials and other competitions

  • The book Hayward Field: Legends and Legacy includes UO athlete-alumni English Gardner and Devon Allen among others

Not only are the artifacts interesting, but they are artfully arranged in the UO Libraries’ brand new glass display cases. Better lighting and more shelf space allow Mandi Garcia, library exhibits coordinator, to show off each artifact to its best advantage.

Celebrating 100 Years of Track and Field Trials

Positioned at the heart of a bustling university campus, the iconic Hayward Field—the site of victories, heartaches, and record-breaking moments—stands as a testament to the fervent local athletic community and their enduring passion for track and field.

Since 1924, the UO has hosted Olympic tryouts, exhibition meets, and team trials many times! The events have taken (or are taking) place on the UO campus in the following years:

  • 1924—Olympic Tryouts

  • 1956—U.S. Olympic Track Team Exhibition Meet

  • 1960—U.S. Olympic Men’s Track & Field Exhibition Meet

  • 1968—U.S. Pre-Olympic Men’s Track and Field Exhibition Meet

  • 1972—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 1976—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (the first trials to feature combined competition for men and women)

  • 1980—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (though the trials were awarded to Eugene for the third time in a row, President Jimmy Carter and the US Olympic Committee boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow in protest of the Soviet-Afghan War. Members of the U.S. Olympic Team were awarded Congressional Gold Medals in recognition of not being able to compete.)

  • 2008—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 2012—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field

  • 2016—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (TrackTown USA, Inc., a local non-profit organization, begin organizing trials at Hayward Field)

  • 2020—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (hosted in 2021 due to COVID-19)

  • 2022—hosted the World Athletics Championships

  • 2024—U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Track and Field (June 21–30)

New Archivist Position to Anchor Athletics Collections

This exhibit also serves as the starting line for a new athletics archival program. Earlier this year, UO Libraries received close to $1 million from a generous lead donor to support expansion of our athletics archives, headed by Reference Services Coordinator and Assistant University Archivist for Athletics Lauren Goss.

The new funding will enable Goss to more proactively curate records in this area and engage in additional academic and public outreach, building on the UO’s strong athletics brand and legacy. Goss is now just one of fewer than ten archivists in the United States with this role. Her research interests and expertise in Title IX and UO athletes position her well to expand collections, support researchers, and further educate our community about the UO Libraries' rich resources. Learn more about her research in her thesis.

“The history of UO athletics is intertwined with the history of the university. I am honored by this generous funding to create this new program. I look forward to working with campus partners and community organizations on innovative projects,” Goss said.

Vice Provost and University Librarian Alicia Salaz echoed Goss’s excitement about the new program, sharing: “The athletics archival program is closely aligned with both University Archives’ mission to preserve and tell the story of the University’s history and impact and the UO Libraries’ strategies of enhancing community and civic engagement and contributing to undergraduate research and instructional opportunities with the use of primary sources.”

Q&A with Bee Trofort-Wilson, sports and portraits photographer and member of Black Women Photographers organization

Photo provided by Bee Trofort-Wilson

For the third consecutive year, TrackTown USA and Black Women Photographers are working together to provide paid opportunities for Black women and non-binary creatives to cover select track & field events this summer at Hayward Field. This will be the first year that will include videographers in addition to photographers.

Apply today to be a part of the Black Women Photographers and TrackTown USA 2024 cohort at BlackWomenPhotographers.com/TrackTown-USA. Application deadline is Friday, March 8, 2024.

We sat down with Bee Trofort-Wilson, a talented commercial and editorial portrait, sports, and fitness photographer, as well as a member of the Black Women Photographers organization. She’s photographed athletes from all over the world at some of the biggest track & field meets in the world, including The Prefontaine Classic and the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.

What sparked your journey into photography, especially within sports?

Growing up, sports was my first love, and art was my second. Being in the magnet art program from middle school to high school, and studying art in college, photography allowed me to mix both of my passions, and taught me my voice as an artist. It allowed me to stay in the game, celebrate athletes, and share stories that often go unseen.

What is your favorite memory while taking photos at Hayward Field?

My favorite memory at Hayward Field was the Athlete Portrait studio during World Champs [2022]! Capturing athletes from all around the world, showcasing their personalities, and creating lasting branding portraits for them to treasure throughout their career has been an unforgettable highlight for me! The Google Translate app was my best friend that week!

What is a key piece of advice for black women aspiring to work in sports photography?

My advice is to "Bee Fearless" and remember "your voice matters." Don't allow fear to stop you from going after what you want! If there's an opportunity you seek, go after it, even through the disappointments. Your voice and your art are more powerful than you know! And network!

Q&A with Taylor Sims, sports photographer and member of Black Women Photographers organization

We sat down with Taylor Sims, a talented sports photographer and a member of the Black Women Photographers organization. She's captured some of the biggest moments in track & field, including The Prefontaine Classic and the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.

What sparked your journey into photography, especially within sports?

My journey into photography started in college. I saw an ad for a camera that I liked and had enough money saved up so I was able to purchase that camera when I went home for the weekend. I started taking pictures of my friends and of others around campus and fell in love with it. I got into sports by taking pictures at a local gym three times a week. I reached out to the owner of the gym to offer creative content services and it's been going up since then. Shooting content for that gym allowed me to build up a sports portfolio and that led to more jobs and contacts in the sports industry.

What is your favorite memory while taking photos at Hayward Field?

Hayward magic is 100% real and you feel it when you're near or when you're far away. This is such a hard question because I have so many favorite moments and memories! My favorite memory while taking photos at Hayward was during the World Championships in 2022. There was a fan with a sign waiting for Allyson Felix to finish interviews and after the interviews finished, the fan thought Allyson didn't notice her but she did. As Allyson walked over to this young girl, she began to cry hysterically and I was in the right place at the right time to capture that exchange between them. As Allyson just spent time with her and comforted her, the tears just kept flowing and the fan couldn't believe that moment was happening. That was special to me because in that moment I realized how important role models and idols are. Not just to young kids but to everyone! It was just beautiful and I'm happy I was there to capture it.

What is a key piece of advice for black women aspiring to work in sports photography?

My advice would be to shoot your shot and shoot it often. Don't be afraid to reach out to brands, athletes and organizations when you want to start building a portfolio or are looking for paid work. Don't be discouraged by the no's that come your way, just continue to stay grounded and focused on your craft until the right doors open for you.

Lastly, don't put yourself in a box when it comes to sports, try anything that you can. You never know how much you can enjoy it until you get out there and you never know who you may run into while you're on a job or just out shooting for experience. Have fun ladies!

Q&A with Mercedes Oliver, track and field photographer and member of Black Women Photographers organization

Photo provided by Mercedes Oliver

For the third consecutive year, TrackTown USA and Black Women Photographers are working together to provide paid opportunities for Black women and non-binary creatives to cover select track & field events this summer at Hayward Field. This will be the first year that will include videographers in addition to photographers.

Apply today to be a part of the Black Women Photographers and TrackTown USA 2024 cohort at BlackWomenPhotographers.com/TrackTown-USA. Application deadline is Friday, March 8, 2024.

We sat down with Mercedes Oliver, a talented photographer and a member of the Black Women Photographers organization. She has been documenting the sport of track and field for many years, including The Prefontaine Classic and the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.

What sparked your journey into photography, especially within sports?

My passion for sports has been ingrained in me since childhood. I immersed myself in various sports activities and was captivated by the dedication and enthusiasm they demanded. Sports became an integral part of my identity, shaping who I am today. Alongside my love for sports, I have been bestowed with a gift of creativity, that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has given to me and I don't take this gift lightly.

Coming from a family of creatives, where each member has their own artistic background, I was surrounded by a diverse array of artistic styles from an early age. Recognizing this innate talent, I naturally gravitated towards creative pursuits. Initially I was a videographer, I soon realized it wasn't the right fit for me. Despite the initial detour, I remained committed to exploring my creative abilities. I found myself thriving in photography, a medium that resonated with me on a deeper level than videography. The photography process became a source of joy and fulfillment for me, leading me to pursue it wholeheartedly.

Today, I find myself embracing both my passion for sports and my creative talents, seamlessly blending the two into my professional journey. It's a path that feels authentic and fulfilling, allowing me to express myself creatively while staying connected to my love for sports.

What is your favorite memory while taking photos at Hayward Field?

One of my most cherished experiences at Hayward Field was my inaugural participation in the Prefontaine Classic alongside the talented photographers of Black Woman Photographers. Collaborating with these amazing women not only enriched my professional skills but also forged lasting friendships. Our bond has remained strong over time, and we continue to support and inspire each other.  As a former college track athlete, track and field holds a special place in my heart. Being able to document this sport, while also forming meaningful connections with fellow enthusiasts who have become integral parts of my life, has been truly rewarding.

What is a key piece of advice for black women aspiring to work in sports photography?

An essential piece of advice for Black women aspiring to pursue sports photography is to cultivate strength and confidence. Unfortunately, the realm of sports creativity often presents challenges for women and Black creatives in particular. Despite these obstacles, it's crucial not to let them deter you from pursuing your passion as a career. Remember, there's room for everyone in this field. I firmly believe in advocating for oneself and maintaining a strong stance against disrespect. This strength doesn't equate to allowing others to mistreat you simply because you're a Black woman. Embrace your uniqueness and stand boldly in your identity. You don't need to conform or diminish yourself to fit into predefined norms. Confidence in your abilities, your representation, and your artistic vision is key, and it's needed! Embrace your distinct style, even if it diverges from traditional norms.

Personally, I celebrate my individuality through my unique artistic approach and personal style, such as my ombre white box braids. In essence, my advice is to confront adversity with unwavering boldness and resilience. Let criticism and attempts to tear you down serve as indicators of your impactful presence in the field. Keep shining brightly as your authentic self, and never allow anyone to diminish your spirit.
