Evolution of a Moment: The Photographs of Brian Lanker – New Exhibit on Display

The sports history of the University of Oregon is preserved across a range of archival collections, including those that reflect Eugene’s broader sociocultural history. In 2022, the UO Libraries – Special Collections and University Archives received the archive of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Brian Lanker. A new exhibit open now in Knight Library highlights four main areas of his career:

  • His photojournalism for The Register-Guard

  • Sports photography featuring the University of Oregon

  • Iconic portraits of pop culture figures from the 1980s and 1990s

  • His acclaimed series, I Dream a World, wherein he photographer 75 of the most influential Black women in American history

Lanker's sports photography captured iconic track and field athletes as well as the supportive fans at Hayward Field:

An opening reception and panel discussion will be held on November 19th at 5pm in the Knight Library Browsing Room. Event registration will be open soon.

The exhibit will be on display at Knight Library through June 2026. It is free and open to the public during Knight Library hours.

The Brian Lanker collection is open to the public for research. The Special Collections and University Archives website provides instructions on how to plan a visit.
